Orchestra Miami concludes its series of Free Outdoor Concerts, with “Beethoven on the Beach”, a celebration of the lives of heroic men. This concert is presented as a gift to the community, and is completely free of charge. The concert is co-sponsored by the Miami Salon Group, the City of Miami Beach and BB&T Bank.

This final outdoor performance will be presented on Saturday, May 19 at 7:00 PM, at the newly renovated North Shore Park Bandshell (also known as the “73rd Street Bandshell”), located at 7250 Collins Avenue in Miami Beach. The venue is situated in the south part of the beautiful North Shore Park. There are bleacher-style seats available, and there is plenty of green space for guests to bring a lawn chair or a blanket. Picnicking is encouraged and beverages will be available for purchase.

The program includes Mozart’s “Overture to the Magic Flute”, Lee Hoiby’s “I Have a Dream” featuring Graham Fandrei as the baritone soloist, and Beethoven’s iconic Symphony #5 in c minor, Op. 67. All three performances will be conducted by Orchestra Miami’s Artistic Director, Elaine Rinaldi.

This year’s theme, “Beethoven on the Beach”, makes the connection between Beethoven and Civil Rights through the Age of Enlightenment. “For me, these concerts are about community”, says Artistic Director Rinaldi. “It makes me very happy to be able to bring people together to enjoy our gorgeous weather and share in the experience of listening to high quality classical music. This is the perfect opportunity to introduce your children to the excitement of live classical music.”

For more information about Orchestra Miami, please call (305) 274-2103 or visit www.orchestramiami.org.

Miami Metropolitan International Fashion Week encompasses the rich cultural diversity that has shaped the city of Miami. By every definition of the word, Miami is a metropolis and a cultural melting pot. With many of the city’s inhabitants and visitors hailing from across the globe, the city sidewalks have morphed into catwalks. The founders of MMIFW wanted to present a centralized opportunity for known designers to expand their market, as well as give up-and-coming designers an opportunity to launch their brand.

May 2012 launches the first annual debut of Miami Metropolitan International Fashion Week. Featuring U.S. and international designers, the event kicks off with Day Wear, followed by Evening Wear, and finishing up with swimwear. The Spring 2012 edition of Miami Metropolitan Fashion Week will take place in the trendy LMNT Art Space.

A powerful and relentless searcher for the union of spirit and body in his interpretations of rhythm and melody, Abbey Rader was raised in the Bronx and influenced by swing, bop, and free improv that were prevalent in his upbringing, and has in more recent years researched the handrumming of many cultures.

Mr. Rader lived in Europe in the late seventies and all through the eighties, where he performed with John Handy and Dr L. Subramaniam in quartet, as well as in trio with John and various bassists. Mr. Rader spent 5 years in the Gunter Hampel Big Band often including Jeanne Lee and Marion Brown as well as in the Hampel trio. Mr. Rader performed with Mal Waldron in quartet and trio, and had his own band the “Right Time”, which had Marc Levin, George Bishop, Leonard Jones, Marty Cook, Ken Simon and other guests. Mr. Rader was a clinician for Sonor drums in Europe for many years, and taught jazz drumset studies at four universities in Germany (Detmold Hochschule, TU Gottingen, TU Braunschweig, and Einbeck Musikhochschule).

The connection comes when you turn it up, and you’re transported to a funky, soulful, urban island in the middle of paradise. Miami-based group Elastic Bond mixes traditional Latin, Soul and Afro grooves, with modern electronic sounds. With a solid foundation of organic songwriting, melodic vocals and good vibes, Elastic Bond delivers music even your mom would like. Venezuelan producer Andres Ponce and Honduran singer-songwriter Sofy Encanto formed the band in 2006, and soon after guitarist Buffalo Brown and trumpet player David Burgos joined forces to expand its unique sound. Their latest release “Frecuencia Natural EP” solidifies Elastic Bond’s inventive fusion of styles that enchants listeners as diverse as the city they call home.

Led by singer Johnny Aguilo, Conjunto Progreso is considered one of the finest “keepers-of-the-flame” orchestras in the states. The conjunto sound, replete with tres finesse (Jose Elias), with powerful sones and deep-groove descarga jams, is alive and well. This is down-and-dirty stuff, close your eyes and you can almost smell the grit of a smoke-filled club reeking of rum and coke, and the sweat of people dancing, having a great time.

¡Suénalo! is the premier band in Miami, with a sound that vividly reflects the different cultures
that shape the Magic City. The members of ¡Suénalo! come from Cuba, Dominican Republic,
Puerto Rico, USA, and Venezuela, and they mix a wide variety of styles that result in a genre
that defies classification, but could comfortably be described as Latin Funk. HipHop, rock, R&B,
afrobeat, cumbia, reggae, soca, salsa, and drum ‘n’ bass are some of the styles intertwined in
their music. ¡Suénalo! is often described as “the essence and sound of Miami.”

Born in Rio de Janeiro, Rose realized she had the gift of singing at a very early age.

Everyone from her mother’s side was a musician. She is the great-grand daughter of the conductor and composer CUPERTINO DE MENEZES and grand daughter of the guitar player and composer MANUEL DE MENEZES. Cupertino, also a flutist, was a band member of a “choro” group led by Callado Junior and Chiquinha Gonzaga, two of the most prominent musicians from this era. Manuel was partner – in music, adventures and “Bohemia – of the most important Brazilian composer in the early 30′s – Noel Rosa.

She started singing professionally with the OCTETO RIO ORCHESTRA performing jn the musically wealthy nightclub scene of Rio. She studied vocal technique with Graciela di Salerno, Nancy Miranda and Suely Mesquita. She also studied theory and ear training at the Instituto Vila Lobos and Centro de Instrução Musical Ian Guest.

Rose graduated with a degree in Portuguese and Literature from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. As a student, she was involved in various theatrical productions with the group “A QUEM INTERESSA.”

Rose Max performed extensively as a soloist with the vocal group AEQUALE under the direction of acclaimed-musical director ANDRÉ PROTÁSIO. Gaining interest and respect locally, she started working with a number of different bands. One of her best experiences was performing at “CLUBE DO SAMBA” (Samba Club) where she had a chance to learn with some of the big names of Brazilian music, such as Maestro Licinho, Neco, Antonio Carlos Tourinho, João Nogueira, and Roberto Ribeiro. She also started working as a session singer, recording jingles and background vocals, which led to the opportunity of backing up some of Brazil’ s most renowned singers.
Rose moved to Miami in October of 1993, where she has been continuing to grow and develop musically, and by keeping a constant performance schedule, she has become highly recognized in the Brazilian, Hispanic and American communities. She won the BRAZILIAN PRESS AWARD for the “Best Female Brazilian Singer Residing and Performing in the USA” in 1997, 1998 and 2001.
