The Miami Music Festival announces Expansion, 2010 Dates, and calls for Artist Applications

Second annual event featuring diverse genres of new music will take place November 12-14, 2010 as key part of “Live Music Month in Miami”.

MMF partners include Miami New Times, The State of Florida Film & Entertainment Office, Miami-Dade County Office of Cultural Affairs, The City of Miami Office of Cultural Affairs, The Miami-Dade Office of Film and Entertainment, The Miami Downtown Development Authority, The Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau, FilMiami

Organizers of the second annual Miami Music Festival will present more than 500 performances by new and developing artists in an expanded roster of venues throughout the city. The showcase will take place November 12-14 during the newly designated “Live Music Month in Miami” and will include two daytime sessions on five stages in Bayfront Park and a show at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts.

A music industry and artists’ conference will take place at the Hyatt Regency Miami, the festival’s headquarters hotel, Friday, November 12, and Saturday, November 13. Musicians may submit showcase applications, register for the conference, and reserve discounted stays at the Hyatt at miamimusicfestival.org beginning May 15.

Partners include Miami New Times, The State of Florida Film & Entertainment Office, Miami-Dade County Office of Cultural Affairs, The City of Miami Office of Cultural Affairs, The Miami-Dade Office of Film and Entertainment, The Miami Downtown Development Authority, The Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau, and FilMiami. The Miami Music Festival and Conference is also produced in cooperation with the Recording Academy, The Urban Network, and performing rights organizations ASCAP, BMI, and SoundExchange.

Performing at showcase festivals has become important for independent musicians who are using new media tools to produce, distribute and market their own music in an effort to reach broad audiences and raise awareness among music industry executives. Events such as the MMF attract discerning audiences to hear new acts or new music from established acts. South by Southwest in Austin, Texas, is just one example of a gathering that has provided opportunities to network with other artists and gain distribution opportunities.

“The MMF will again present an amazing array of rock, alternative, and singer/songwriter acts but will feature in equal measure Latin, urban, Caribbean, and jazz artists,” said the festival’s CEO, Irwin Kornfeld. “Miami’s live music scene continues to develop and grow, and the MMF is growing with it.”

Said Miami New Times publisher Kevin Thornburg: “As the most authoritative voice in the marketplace for the live music scene, we are honored to be a part of the Miami Music Festival. Miami already hosts an array of world-class film, art, food, and electronic music events, and the only missing piece was a live music event like the MMF.”

The inaugural MMF in December 2009 attracted more than 18,000 attendees to see 270 acts in 75 shows on 25 stages.

“… a pretty weird theme for my art: Revenge, “Served Cold” is opening this Saturday. What I like about this show, is that it made me find the Dark Side of my characters. I didn’t think they had one before, but it turns out thanks to Pink Ghost, they do and it’s a funny dark side that I’m incorporating also in an animated comic I’m working on with my characters. Usually my characters are just pure Happiness, showing the beauty of what’s inside of us. Revenge is usually a ‘bad’ thing, but in this case it bad, but not so bad. In this picture above, I had just finished these three paintings, so they are unframed. I did them on 9×12 canvases in acrylic painting. But framed they are 11×14.

Other great artists in the show are: Brigitte Coovert, Miss Led, SOMA, Helena García, Jason Snyder, Dennise Rodriguez, Heidi Elise Wirz, Eliza Frye, Miss Kika, Patrick Fatica, Aleloop, Danny Brito, Piktorama, Rudy Fig, Kat Reeder, Japanda, Steff Bomb, Justin Wallis and Matylda McIlvenny. Non-Profit Organization is proud to announce Miami’s first ever Emcee Olympics set to take place Friday April 23rd, 2010 at the Historic Joseph Caleb Auditorium in the heart of the Liberty City Community! This is not your typical emcee battle. It is destined to be a memorable competition among Miami’s most fiercest and lyrical emcees involving 3 rounds of intense FREESTYLING.

DO NOT BE MISTAKEN! THIS WILL BE A BATTLE OF THE MINDS, NOT PUNCHLINES!

In The competition emcees will be judged based on (1) Creativity, (2) Content: relevance to topics or situations and (3) Stage Presence.

Rounds will be organized in the following manner:

PRELIMINARY LIGHTNING ROUND: 20 emcees will showcase their best material in 4 bars.
ROUND ONE: The top 10 emcees from the preliminary lightning round will advance into this round which will involve freestyling about random images displayed on a screen.
ROUND TWO: The top 8 emcees will advance into this round which will be oriented towards flowing over tempo changing beats.

ROUND THREE: The final 6 emcees will be split into groups and will be given conflict scenarios.
The last 3 standing emcees with the most points awarded by Olympic Judges will win CASH PRIZES:
GOLD – FIRST PLACE – $500

SILVER – SECOND PLACE – $300

BRONZE – THIRD PLACE – $200
ENTRY TO THE EVENT IS $10 (OR $5 WITH 2 CANNED GOODS FOR HAITI RELIEF)
