The Miami Music Festival announces Expansion, 2010 Dates, and calls for Artist Applications

Second annual event featuring diverse genres of new music will take place November 12-14, 2010 as key part of “Live Music Month in Miami”.

MMF partners include Miami New Times, The State of Florida Film & Entertainment Office, Miami-Dade County Office of Cultural Affairs, The City of Miami Office of Cultural Affairs, The Miami-Dade Office of Film and Entertainment, The Miami Downtown Development Authority, The Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau, FilMiami

Organizers of the second annual Miami Music Festival will present more than 500 performances by new and developing artists in an expanded roster of venues throughout the city. The showcase will take place November 12-14 during the newly designated “Live Music Month in Miami” and will include two daytime sessions on five stages in Bayfront Park and a show at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts.

A music industry and artists’ conference will take place at the Hyatt Regency Miami, the festival’s headquarters hotel, Friday, November 12, and Saturday, November 13. Musicians may submit showcase applications, register for the conference, and reserve discounted stays at the Hyatt at miamimusicfestival.org beginning May 15.

Partners include Miami New Times, The State of Florida Film & Entertainment Office, Miami-Dade County Office of Cultural Affairs, The City of Miami Office of Cultural Affairs, The Miami-Dade Office of Film and Entertainment, The Miami Downtown Development Authority, The Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau, and FilMiami. The Miami Music Festival and Conference is also produced in cooperation with the Recording Academy, The Urban Network, and performing rights organizations ASCAP, BMI, and SoundExchange.

Performing at showcase festivals has become important for independent musicians who are using new media tools to produce, distribute and market their own music in an effort to reach broad audiences and raise awareness among music industry executives. Events such as the MMF attract discerning audiences to hear new acts or new music from established acts. South by Southwest in Austin, Texas, is just one example of a gathering that has provided opportunities to network with other artists and gain distribution opportunities.

“The MMF will again present an amazing array of rock, alternative, and singer/songwriter acts but will feature in equal measure Latin, urban, Caribbean, and jazz artists,” said the festival’s CEO, Irwin Kornfeld. “Miami’s live music scene continues to develop and grow, and the MMF is growing with it.”

Said Miami New Times publisher Kevin Thornburg: “As the most authoritative voice in the marketplace for the live music scene, we are honored to be a part of the Miami Music Festival. Miami already hosts an array of world-class film, art, food, and electronic music events, and the only missing piece was a live music event like the MMF.”

The inaugural MMF in December 2009 attracted more than 18,000 attendees to see 270 acts in 75 shows on 25 stages.

Conference speakers and festival sponsors will be announced in the coming weeks.

The Miami Music Festival is a three-day, multi-stage event and emerging artists’ conference taking place November 12-14, 2010. The festival, which is open to the public, will be held at various venues across Miami, featuring a variety of music genres by musicians hailing from Florida, the U.S. and around the world. The Miami Music Festival conference for emerging artists at the Hyatt Regency Miami will offer a series of panels, master classes, workshops and interactive sessions designed to give musicians hands-on instruction and information about navigating the new music industry. In 2009, the festival entertained 18,000 people with 270 acts across 75 shows and 25 stages. This November, the Miami Music Festival will serve as the centerpiece of “Live Music Month in Miami”, the city’s cooperative effort to support live music and emerging artists.

We went to the opening night of Spring Awakening at the Adrienne Arsht Center in Miami and to the cast party afterwards. We met with the winner of our ticket giveaway contest Bekki Ciufo. She was randomly chosen as the winner and we are very happy to have been able to share the evening with her. She is a fan of the show and we had lots of fun taking pictures and getting autographs from the cast members. The pictures are posted below.

I received an email from Bekki the next day regarding the show:

Thank you so much for the tickets to Spring Awakening! It is my favorite musical, and I was so excited that I got the chance to see it again at the Arsht Center. Tuesday night was my third time seeing the show on tour, and it was just as amazing as the times before. Seeing the show from the balcony allowed me to see all the breathtaking lighting, and the energy of the cast resonated throughout the entire theatre. It was such a beautiful performance that stirred up all types of emotions from start to finish. Spring Awakening is a one-of-a-kind musical that everyone from teenagers to grandparents can relate to.

Once again, thank you so much for the tickets. I had such an amazing time watching the show and then meeting the cast afterwards.

Non-Profit Organization is proud to announce Miami’s first ever Emcee Olympics set to take place Friday April 23rd, 2010 at the Historic Joseph Caleb Auditorium in the heart of the Liberty City Community! This is not your typical emcee battle. It is destined to be a memorable competition among Miami’s most fiercest and lyrical emcees involving 3 rounds of intense FREESTYLING.

DO NOT BE MISTAKEN! THIS WILL BE A BATTLE OF THE MINDS, NOT PUNCHLINES!

In The competition emcees will be judged based on (1) Creativity, (2) Content: relevance to topics or situations and (3) Stage Presence.

Rounds will be organized in the following manner:

PRELIMINARY LIGHTNING ROUND: 20 emcees will showcase their best material in 4 bars.
ROUND ONE: The top 10 emcees from the preliminary lightning round will advance into this round which will involve freestyling about random images displayed on a screen.
ROUND TWO: The top 8 emcees will advance into this round which will be oriented towards flowing over tempo changing beats.

ROUND THREE: The final 6 emcees will be split into groups and will be given conflict scenarios.
The last 3 standing emcees with the most points awarded by Olympic Judges will win CASH PRIZES:
GOLD – FIRST PLACE – $500

SILVER – SECOND PLACE – $300

BRONZE – THIRD PLACE – $200
ENTRY TO THE EVENT IS $10 (OR $5 WITH 2 CANNED GOODS FOR HAITI RELIEF)

EMCEE REGISTRATION FOR THE COMPETITION IS ON SITE ONLY, 8 PM – 9 PM, AND REQUIRES A $10 FLAT RATE FROM ALL COMPETITORS!

I went to a New Tech Community meeting last week in Boca Raton. I casually listened to that night’s presentation on social media which had great highlights and pointers. My ears perked and I definitely sat forward in my chair when the presenter mentioned Lady Gaga. What is Lady Gaga doing up on the projection screen?? Well I learned my new factoid of the week which I happily told some of my closer friends. None of them knew that Lady Gaga had hit big on YouTube with 180 million views. And everyday that number just keeps on growing. See the video below!

There was the “Evolution of Dance” video that had the top spot for quite some time. Then I read about “Charlie Bit My Finger”. Both of these are funny comical videos. Lady Gaga isn’t funny or comical. There is that bold creative genius though that has to be admired.

It took over two years for “Charlie Bit My Finger” to earn the title of “Most Viewed”. Lady Gaga succeeded in getting the top spot in only a few months, the video was uploaded in November 2009.

I am a fan, but if I had not gone to a technology meeting I would not have known about her hitting #1. Seems like that number of views keeps growing by the day. Probably because the reputation keeps propelling the video forward. So I thought I would share this little bit of trivia with the Go Live Miami readers and with her Little Monsters…

Hi everyone!

The time has come for my annual birthday celebration. This year’s theme is Mad Hatter (Alice in Wonderland) and we will journey into the rabbit hole this Friday, April 16th, 2010 at TK’s 5 Star Island residence. Come wearing your Wonderland attire to jump into Alice’s world of rose gardens and tea parties, rabbits and mad hatters.


The party is co-sponsored by The Opium Group and Grey Goose Vodka and begins at 8:30pm. TK will be offering delectable food for guests to enjoy throughout the night.

Limited valet will be available, but it is strongly suggested to arrive by taxi or limo.

In lieu of gifts, a suggested donation to United Way will be collected at the door.

The post event party will take place at SET where the theme will be continued…

As we were covering Super Bowl events in Miami we were invited to cover the Super Sexy Saturday Night party hosted by Jamie Foxx at the Miami Beach Surfcomber Hotel which became the Budlight Hotel. The highlight attraction was a blowout concert by Usher. There was a slight sound problem after the concert and Jamie Foxx was very successfully picking up the slack by offering to pour free shots for all of the ladies. We were six inches away from Foxx as he ‘did his thing’. Besides being one of the greatest actors, he is not shy and loves to mingle with his fans. Saturday night, June 20th, 2009 at Nocturnal Derrick May and Francois K, better known as the “Cosmic Twins” will be spinning. My friend Nelson Fernandez aka DJ Nova from Pornograph Events will be opening for them. I’ve been friends with Nelson for many years now. He knows house music very well. Lives it, loves, plays it. He called me super excited one day to tell me about this event he was putting together.

So the Cosmic Twins play the best in minimal Funk Electro, Dirty Tech-House, and funky Techno. I did not realize there were so many abberations of house. When I listened to house music I recall that we would mostly just distinguish between drum and bass, trance, and house. Or I guess drum and bass is not house. It is just drum and bass. See, I am not technically clued in on the classification of electronic music. However, I do love Winter Music Conference.

I know events and people. Nelson knows house music. So when he tells me this is a must-go-to event, I take his word for it.
