Sagamore, The Art Hotel, Announces Will Ryman as Featured Artist for Art Basel Miami Beach 2011 In honor of the hotel’s 10th anniversary of the Annual Art Basel Brunch

Internationally acclaimed artist to install 65th Street Last seen in the U.S. in New York City

South Beach is coming up roses, literally, as Sagamore, The Art Hotel on Miami Beach, along with its owner, Martin Taplin, art collector and curator Cricket Taplin, and the Paul Kasmin Gallery in New York, announce Will Ryman’s 65th Street to be publicly installed on the hotel’s beachfront for Art Basel Miami Beach 2011. A towering sculpture with one bud reaching as high as 22 feet, the exhibit reflects Ryman’s flair for the dramatic and absurdly wonderful.

The dwarfing blossoms will spring up from steel stems on Sunday, November 27, and remain on display through Sunday, December 4, 2011. A fanciful and colorful display of flora blooming on white sand beach and set against the Atlantic’s perpetuity, the installation will enamor viewers with its larger-than-life landscape.

Offering a bug’s-eye-view of the world, 65th Street will feature four colossal pink and red buds, ranging from five to ten feet in diameter, with the tallest bud inhabited by a brass aphid and beetle. Ryman, familiar with non-traditional materials, utilizes stainless steel, yacht-grade fiberglass resin, automotive paint and brass to create sculptures designed to withstand the elements.

Will Ryman is the latest in a long list of distinguished artists to exhibit at the South Beach hotel. Since the inception of Art Basel Miami Beach in 2002 when the international art market incorporated the city of Miami as a prime art venue, Sagamore, The Art Hotel, has hosted celebrated artists from around the world including Massimo Vitali, Yoko Ono, Spencer Tunick, Olaf Breuning, Elliot Erwitt and Roxy Paine, among others.

“Will Ryman is one of the most important artists of our time; his art will make history and we are extremely fortunate to celebrate his amazing talent at the Sagamore,” says Cricket Taplin.

This year Sagamore, The Art Hotel, will also celebrate the 10th anniversary of their Annual Art Basel Brunch. One of the most sought-after Art Basel events – which commenced in 2001 despite the events of 9/11 canceling the launch of Art Basel Miami Beach– the hotel partners with six local museums including the Bass Museum of Art, Lowe Art Museum, Miami Art Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art, The Patricia & Phillip Frost Museum of Art at FIU, the Wolfsonian-FIU and Lincoln Center in New York City.

“It is a privilege and an honor to have Will as the featured artist of our 10th anniversary,” continues Taplin. “My husband and I began collecting his work in 2006; we have followed his career since and are constantly impressed with his larger-than-life concepts and ideas. He takes everyday objects that are often overlooked, blows them up and places them center stage, reminding you, literally, to ‘take time to smell the roses.’”

A native New Yorker, Will Ryman is internationally known for his large-scale figurative sculptures based on urban scenes and oversized flora. His work steadily incorporates a range of materials including plaster, fiberglass, stainless steel, paper machê, magic sculpt, brass, copper tubing, and cast aluminum. A writer turned artist, Ryman’s work is heavily influenced by the works of absurdist playwrights and philosophers.

Design Miami/ maintains a consistent roster of the world’s most active design galleries, including: Galerie Patrick Seguin (Paris), Galerie kreo (Paris), Carpenters Workshop Gallery (London & Paris), Demisch Danant (NY), R 20th Century (NY), Johnson Trading Gallery (NY), Jousse Entreprise (NY) and Cristina Grajales Gallery (NY). This Miami fair also welcomes back Galerie Downtown – François Laffanour (Paris), Dansk Møbelkunst Gallery (Zurich & Paris), Hostler Burrows (NY), moss (NY), Magen H. Gallery (NY) and Galerie VIVID (Rotterdam).

First-time exhibitors include Didier Ltd (London), Galerie Maria Wettergren (Paris), Galerie Pierre Marie Giraud (Brussels), Mark McDonald (Hudson, NY), Modernity (Stockholm) and Novalis Fine Arts (Turin). In addition, the Design On/Site program, the showcase for small-scale yet high-level exhibitions of new work by individual designers or studios, will include Design Miami’s first ever participant from Africa, Southern Guild (Wilderness).

Alongside these venerable galleries, Design Miami/ organizes a cultural program that profiles established and up-and-coming designers, commissions new architectural and design work and brings together luminaries from the worlds of design, art, fashion and architecture to discuss their influences and process.

A highlight of this December’s show is the site-specific installation by Designer of the Year Award winner, UK-based architect David Adjaye. As his award commission, Adjaye will create a pavilion, entitled Genesis. Adjaye calls Genesis his first work of “giant architectural furniture” that combines structure, seating,
windows and doors into a single gesture.

For the second consecutive year, Design Miami’s Design Talks series will be moderated by W Magazine Editor-in-Chief Stefano Tonchi. Over the course of three days, these conversations will include a selection the world’s top architects, discussing their careers, collaborations and passions.

As part of the show’s series of satellite exhibitions, the Miami Design District presents in collaboration with the Buckminster Fuller Foundation, utopian architect Fuller’s 1970s Fly’s Eye Dome alongside Lord Norman Foster’s reconstructed Dymaxion car. The fair also welcomes a capsule exhibition of the french design show Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity presented by The Wolfsonian Museum.

Design Miami’s ambitious curatorial program and investment in bringing the most exciting names in design to the fair would not be possible without the generous commitment of its partners. Audi, Design Miami’s Exclusive Automotive Sponsor, Fendi and Swarovski Crystal Palace will unveil new design projects at the fair; Veuve Clicquot and Cappellini also continue their support with the 2011 show.

Michael Workman is reworking the Bridge Art Fair into Verge, which will focus exclusively on emerging art. Verge was the name given to a section of artist-run spaces housed within Bridge. Verge will launch this year in Miami at the Catalina Hotel to coincide with Art Basel Miami Beach.

<img src="http://golivemiami.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/Verge-Art-Basel-300x101.gif" alt="Verge Art Basel 300x101 Where is Bridge Art Fair?
Verge is an international platform for the most exciting and interesting in new and emerging art. Verge exists to establish boundaries of the extraordinary as a counter to the natural compulsion towards stagnation in the way art is evaluated and delivered to the public. Staying true to this necessary state for the advancement of art requires a sustained focus on the best new ideas and practices of those marginal or newly emerging to international art audiences. The satisfaction of this fixed requirement for a healthy and competitive artistic culture is at the core of Verge as an international exposition of the highest quality artistic production and the galleries, museums and audiences who sustain it.

Miguel Abreu Gallery (New York) mounts a solo show of Pieter Schoolwerth’s paintings. In his allegorical tableaux, Schoolwerth insists on placing the depicted body at the center of his ingenious scenes, as a first order of resistance to the forces of abstraction. Within a single still picture he attempts to render the fact of the body’s existence in multiple images.

With “My Rising Phoenix,” Ellen de Bruijne Projects (Amsterdam) puts forward three strong positions by female artists Lara Almarcegui, Pauline Boudry / Renate Lorenz and Falke Pisano. Next to their critical approach towards society’s morbid growth in wealth and consumption, all three artists present in their work an inner strength with a productive focus on “creating constructions.”

Joe Bradley presents his “Shamagoo Paintings” at Canada Gallery (New York). The paintings – employing dirt, raw canvas and loosely drawn symbols – are part of a greater installation specifically created for this presentation.

Cherry and Martin (Los Angeles) installs a two-person show with new works by Amanda Ross-Ho and Noah Sheldon. In their photo-based pieces and sculptures, Ross-Ho and Sheldon actively investigate personal identity and experience within the context of America’s overwhelmingly disjunctive – often broken – mass-produced image and product-driven landscape.

Pilar Corrias Gallery (London) presents a solo exhibition of works by Ulla von Brandenburg, a participant in this year’s Venice Biennale. The installation is separated in two parts by a curtain, one area dedicated to Brandenburg’s watercolors, while the other part of the booth presents the film “Singspiel, ” both looking to the late 19th century and putting current depictions of reality into question.

For Art Positions, James Fuentes (New York) mounts a solo show with sculptures by Agathe Snow, consisting of the completion into her year-long research of the world of Leonardo da Vinci. Da Vinci’s machine concepts are the basis for the series of Snow’s raw sculptures exploring the inventions of the Renaissance times.

In their Art Positions project, i8 Gallery (Reykjavik) present a new installation by Egill Saebjornsson, which comprises of objects on a stage animated by a video projection and sound. In Saebjornsson’s work, everyday objects take on an unexpectedly life-like quality, encouraging the viewer to look afresh at their surroundings.

The group show “Time-Gap-Memory” at Klemm’s (Berlin) engages the notion of time, as in memory and past, compiling works by Gwenneth Boelens, Falk Haberkorn, Alexej Meschtschanow and Adrian Sauer. Crossing different media – drawing, collage, photography and sculpture – the gesture of conscious appropriation, utilization and reinvention is the thread that ties together this presentation.

Sara Meltzer Gallery (New York) shows a solo project by artist Sarah Cain, whose focal interest is to challenge the status of painting and employ abstraction as a mode of representation. She incorporates natural elements and found material, moving fluidly between works on paper, canvas, sculpture and site-specific installation.

Proyectos Monclova (Mexico City) presents a group show featuring Nina Beier and Mario Garcia Torres, which focuses on psychoanalytic theory, history, architecture and politics. The show includes paintings, sculptural-architectural elements and video.

The show at Mizuma Art Gallery (Tokyo) presents a new video installation and photographic works by Jun Nguyen-Hatsushiba. For the project “Breathing is Free: 12,756.3,” Nguyen-Hatsushiba documents and refers to the globe’s diameter, a distance that he tries to reach while running in various cities around the world.

In his project “The Michael Winslow Typewriter Experience” at Nogueras Blanchard (Barcelona), Ignacio Uriarte works together with the actor Michael Winslow, who became famous in the 1980s thanks to his role in the comedy film “Police Academy.” For his work, Uriarte has invited Winslow to create a live monument to a typewriter, imitating the sound for a video piece, which in the exhibition is surrounded by Uriate’s typewriter drawings.

Ratio 3 (San Francisco) presents a two-person show with Ruth Laskey and Mitzi Pederson, who share the use of delicate materials and an attention to the subtleties of color, line and shape. Pederson’s sculptures and Laskey’s intricate weavings explore concerns of minimalism with an exciting contemporary edge.

Redling Fine Art (Los Angeles) highlights artists Jason Kraus and Jeff Kopp, each exhibiting work that plays on the materiality of common objects and manipulate them to highlight the subtle perversity and uncanniness of the everyday world.

Sutton Lane (London) mounts a juxtaposition of Reena Spaulings, a title character in a novel who then emerged as a fictional artist and gallery in Manhattan, and Marcel Broodthaers, the great progenitor of a rigorous but humorous practice of institutional critique. Like Spaulings, Broodthaers started as an artist in a contrived and poetic way – in both cases, the identity of the artist is called into question from the beginning, serving as a platform for further exploration.

The installation at the booth of T293 (Naples) is based on a work in progress by Sonia Almeida, in which a single street is mapped by the sequence of colors on its left and its right side, correlating with the idea of the two sides of the brain and the duality of body and mind. Almeida’s paintings express the duplicity of the body and how perception intrinsically connects those two sides.

Rachel Uffner Gallery (New York) constructs an exhibition of ceramic fragments produced during a tea ceremony held by artist Barb Choit in in February 2009 in New York City, which included a subsequent breaking of the cups and saucers. The installation includes the inventory amassed during this event as well as the photographs and documentations, fetishizing the broken, useless objects on the floor.

Wallspace (New York) features a three-person presentation with Fia Backström, Walead Beshty and Shannon Ebner. All three artists, in different ways, seek to exploit, deconstruct and repurpose systems of language, exchange and production, with strong ties to the legacy of conceptual art, performance and contemporary photographic practices.

Under the title “The Contemporary Cave” artist Rinus van de Velde installs a site-specific installation at the booth of Gallery Zink (Munich/Berlin/New York). “The Contemporary Cave” is the studio, archive and home of the fictional sculptor “William Crowder,” who van de Velde invented as his alter ego, presenting his sculptures, drawings and documentations of the life of the artist’s counterpart.
